Firedrake Dragonrealm Richard Knaak 9780595092147 Books

Let's get straight to what you want to know, why this book is so good. You do have the typical conflict between good and evil, wars are waged and light seems as though it will fall. There are powerful warlocks abound, a beautiful enchantress, and shapeshifting Dragon Kings. But as usual, something unexpected occurs, and so the forces of evil are thwarted once again. The thing about this novel, is that the unexpected really is unexpected. Knaak creates a plot filled with twists and turns, not to mention fantastical concepts that I have not seen paralleled in all of my readings. I give this book a five purely on its ability to drive thought and imagination. Once you get past some of the rather unimaginative names (i.e. the gold dragon is named Gold, the black Black, and so on and so forth) then you are free to enjoy a magical ride of intrigue and suspense.

Firedrake Dragonrealm Richard Knaak 9780595092147 Books Reviews

The realm has long been controlled by the Dragon Kings. At one point, magic users known as the Dragon Masters, attempted to free mankind from their tyrannical rule, but though Nathan Bedlam, the strongest of the Masters, managed to kill one of the Dragon kings (the Purple Dragon), they were all wiped out, thanks to a betrayal by Nathan's son Asran. But all is not lost for mankind, as Cabe, Asran's son is discovered. He may be the strongest human magic user in history and he could change the future, if he isn't killed first.

Of all the adult fantasy series I have read, this is probably one of my least favorite ones. The characters and their relationships feel undeveloped and unrealistic. Cabe is sort of personality-less (in part because he has a-literal-piece of his grandfather Nathan in him) and makes little to know decisions on his own. Who wants to follow a character who is passive and constantly being captured or lucking through his magic? And what good is a character who puts no effort into being an all-powerful magician? Lady Gwen is even more problematic for me. I want her to be a strong woman, but she doesn't really do much of anything. I find her sudden feelings for Cabe (and his feelings for her) both uncomfortable and awkward. She had a relationship with his grandfather! I am fine with her caring about him in a parental way (he is her lover's grandson), but do you really want to kiss the woman who kissed your grandfather? There is not development in their relationship either, they have barely a conversation before they are both suddenly in love with each other.

Events rush from one big thing to another without taking any time to dwell in the moment.

There is no subtlety or complexity. The one remotely complex character isn't actually complex. Shade, a redemption character if there is any in the book, has ancient evil deeds to make up for, but there is no internal struggle. He is all good or all bad depending on his incarnation. (Think of Cara from Sword of Truth or Grianne of Sword of Shannara, who take an active role in becoming better people.)

This isn't a terrible book, it simply doesn't stand up to some of the others I have enjoyed.
This was the debut novel from an Author who has now evolved into, what some may call a wizard in the arena of creating fantastical worlds and their inhabitants. He is well known amongst the World of Warcraft community for his penmanship of some of their lore novels and, it was through this medium, that I became aware of him. I decided to read this as I was intrigued to see how his love for writing fantasy not only began, but how it had progressed over time.

The main protagonist in this book is a young man who is full of the arrogance of his youth, but there is also an underlying current of uncertainty in things he does that make him instantly likeable to the reader. He is of an age where he is easily smitten by a pretty face, and it made me smile to see how quickly this happened to him as it seems that the Author had perfectly captured this part of all our lives; the growing up and discovering the opposite sex. Although I felt that more time could have been given to the development of this character, there were so many others in this book, both ‘human’ and ‘non-human’, that to spend an overly long time developing one would have resulted in others being under-developed and this would have resulted in the book being lacking in many ways. As the title suggests there are dragons in this novel, and they also were given subject to some very interesting development, but some of them lacked the explanation of their motivation behind the things they wanted to do. I’m uncertain as to whether this is explained more in the subsequent books, but in this particular instalment it would have been nice to see a little more back story to them given.

The storyline itself is very well written and is able to throw a few surprising plot twists and turns at a reader who may think they know what is coming next. Showing the skill that would later make him a great loremaster, this Author weaves dragon lore into his story with ease, and adds his own twist on the lore which results in it being expanded even more. However, if you are looking for a fantasy novel that is full of brilliant prose you may be disappointed with this book; at times the language became rather dull but this in no way detracted from the overall enjoyment that reading this book would bring.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys this Authors later works, but they need to remember when reading it that is was his first book and try to lay aside any comparisons they may want to make. If you have know someone who is interested in fantastical world or plays Dungeons & Dragons, but they don’t read this book would be a great way to introduce them to the world of reading. I will definitely be reading the remaining Dragonrealm books.

This was a good book, only issue I had with it was it seemed many events were moving too quickly. But it was worth reading it and kept me entertained throughout the whole book.
Just a great series. My two teen boys really enjoyed this one.
No issues.
