The Watchtower eBook Lee Carroll

After immensely enjoying Black Swan Rising I'm sorry to say I'm struggling to finish The Watchtower. The writing is as beautiful as ever, with lovely and poetic imagery. But as other reviewers have noted, Lee Carroll made the decision to tell this story from the alternating viewpoints of Garet, searching for Will in contemporary times; and 16th century Will in the throes of his love affair with Garet's ancestor Marguerite. Will's love affair with Marguerite is so cliche and superficial that I am not remotely moved by it. This makes it harder to accept the intensity of his love for Garet, which is supposed to be partially motivated by his grand passion for her ancestor. I'm about halfway through the book and I find myself wondering why Garet was so desperate that she went all the way to Paris to find Will, whose love affair with her ancestor seemed rather adolescent, if anything, and who didn't bother seeking her out again after their adventures in the last book. Just from a structural standpoint, the Will sections keep interrupting the momentum in Garet's contemporary search for him. Her writing is so lovely that I would try another Lee Carroll book ... after carefully reading the reader reviews first.

The Watchtower eBook Lee Carroll Reviews

While the first volume, Black Swan Rising, was excellent, this follow-up is less so. Still a good read with interesting characters of all species.
I can't wait to read the next books in this series. Any fan of Anne Rice or Kim Harrison should consider putting these on their shelves to enjoy. Relaxing, exciting reading. I hope lee continues this series for a while beyond just three books !!!!!!!
I was so excited to get this book. The first book was great. What a let down this one was. There are two stories going on. One is the present with Garet that was great. The second was of Will. The second was so boring I found myself reading part of Will's chapter and then skipping it because it just did not pull me in. I won't waste my time or money on the 3rd book of this series.
Loved Black Swan Rising for the action, suspense, and intriguing cast of fey characters. Fun! Unfortunately, The Watchtower goes back to the past, on and on about the love affair between Will and Marguerite. They both seemed ridiculously naive and shallow. Here is Marguerite, this immortal fey, and she acts like a caricature of the romantic fool. Totally unbelievable.
I was so disappointed in this book after reading the first one. But the shifting viewpoints between the main characters, as well as the timeline shift was just too confusing. And really - a "stock market" in Shakespearean England???? I don't think so. It's boring and out of place in a fantasy novel and really didn't add anything to the story. I didn't even finish the book. Gave it away and if I hadn't bought it used, I'd be really mad about throwing my money away.
"The Watchtower", a sequel to "Black Swan Rising", return us to the world of jewelry designer Garet James, who discovered in the previous book that she is descended from a line of women pledged to protect the world from supernatural evil. Picking up a few months after that book ended, Garet is in France, looking for signs of her boyfriend Will, a 400 year old vampire who stole a magical box from her as part of an attempt to turn himself mortal so that he can be with her. Believing that he has sent her a sign, Garet tries to join him on a journey to the Summer Country, the land of the fey, but along the way she and Will find themselves battling the forces of evil alchemist John Dee and his men, jeopardizing their mission and also their lives. This book not only opens up more of Garet's world for the reader but also delves into Will's backstory, and both plots run parallel before they run together with surprising results.
(3.5 stars) This is the second book in the Black Swan Rising series. Garet has been waiting for a sign from Will Hughes to join him in his quest to get to the Summer Country in hopes of becoming mortal again. She has her doubts after he stole the box from her, but when she does get a signal from him, she is off to France to see if she can make her own way into the Summer Country. The story is told in parallel between Garet's journey and Will own past journey when he sought immortality to be with Garet's ancestor, Marguerite. Along her journey she meets a number of memorable characters, including an arborist who has become a tree, a gnome living in a labyrinth, and a descendant of the Faery from the sea who has a remarkable number of arms that allow her to be a very efficient archivist and one who has her own reason for traveling to the Summer Country. Along the way, Garet uses some inspiration from some unusual mechanisms to create a watch, adding the symbol of the Watchtower, which appears to have some unusual powers. Along the way, we get to see the young, and immature Will and see how he has changed over time. Garet must find Will and then we see that the past and present will collide with some interesting consequences. John Dee figures into the story once again along with several other mysterious characters. This was a good addition to the story, and I am curious to see how the trilogy will play out.
