Oh how younger generations today think they can appropriate the vampire mythos...
Well AR created it a generation ago, and it has endured in the Vampire Lestat, the sequel to the best seller Interview with the Vampire. Lestat continues the story, but from the point of view of the eponymous Brat Prince. The story unfolds in the modern age, where Lestat awakens from a long period of sleep, and then in traditional AR fashion, takes us back to the eve of Revolutionary France. In Vampire Lestat you get the account of the same story in Interview, but from a different POV. It delves into the psyche of Lestat, unfolds his motivations, his fears. Anne's vampires dont sparkle, (but appear translucent with age and time) or drink synthetic blood, (for them human blood is the only beverage, and its preferred warm and from the vein), or go to high school, (but can and do become Rock Gods). It culminates in Anne's beloved New Orleans, a place that only Anne Rice can describe and transport us to. For the lover of supernatural horror, or vampire fiction, this book deserves a place on your shelves.

Anne Rice The Vampire Lestat A Graphic Novel Faye Perozich Anne Rice Daerick Gross 9780345373946 Books Reviews

It has been said over and over that this was a dark story. I say there was nothing dark about it. Deep, maybe, but dark... only if one thinks so. "Drag Me to Hell" or "Let the Right Hand In"--paranormal psychological horror...that's dark and that is not "The Vampire Lestat". It is, however, a deep historical, mythological vampire fiction with homosexual, incestuous undertones (more frilly & fluffy). I'm not going to write any spoilers, but just to let you know, this is 70% mythological vampire history; 20% Lestat's past history and 10% present day Lestat... and let us not forget Lestat's rock band--the best part of the story (I pictured something in my imagination like Def Leppard (rock `n roll forever)) . To me, the writing of this novel comes off as pretentious, but most reviews see it as elegant prose. I just didn't get it...I guess the climax was towards the end because most of it was fictional history being narrated until the last Act. The story line was not an easy-flowing-exciting story; I actually got bored (read 9 other novels within 2 weeks before I finished this book). Anne's descriptive writing was really good (but the story was all over the place and off track) and that's why it got 3 stars. I loved "Interview with the Vampire" and "The Queen of the Damned" but I was very disappointed with this book because the story was nothing like what the title alluded to.
Has been my favorite author since Jr High, and I have always been quite the bibliophile (now in my 30s). I have my 7th grade daughter reading these books now. They are transforming, rich, educational, and complex. I have more respect for Anne Rice then any other fiction writer rivaled only by Daniel Quinn, possibly. Her characters and dialogues are so well written that I would easily believe that she listened to these conversations as they happened. Vampires that were "created" 6,000 years ago to today from locations all over the world provides readers with tantalizing glimpses into histories and cultures that must have cost Rice quite a bit of research to deliver. Romantic and dark, her books find the spark of poetry in the most Stoic of souls--- as poetic as that may sound, I am known for being fairly Stoic.
Ann Rice is the progenitor and absolute authority of literary vampire lore as far as I am concerned. She has made vampires sexy in a way that no other author has.

Her novels deal with the internal struggle between human morality and the need to kill and consume to maintain immortality.

Lestat is a loveable devil. He ponders his existence and his purpose in the savage garden like no other. If you have met him in another Rice book (interview with a vampire perhaps) you should absolutely read this book which gives you a deeper understanding of his character.

When Louie tells his story you only see one dimension of his being. After reading this book you will see Lestat in a whole new light, and be able to understand some of the choices he made in the first book.

I also think this book is essential for developing a greater appreciation of all of Rice's other vampire chronicles. Really you shouldn't need a positive review to buy this title. If you are as intoxicated by Rice's language as I am, then you can no more deny yourself this book than Lestat could deny Akasha's invitation to taste the oldest and most powerful blood in the world.
The Vampire Lestat is a must-have for any Anne Rice fan or fans of vampire books in general. It is a followup to Interview With The Vampire. While Interview was told through the eyes of Louis, this The Vampire Lestat is told from Lestat's point of view. It is basically his autobiography, as he tells of his life as a human and how he became a vampire. In this book, we see not only his delightfully wicked side that Louis tells about in the first book, but we also see his more human side. The Brat Prince is not quite as evil as everyone else makes him out to be, although he is definitely no saint either. This book is brilliant, and I have read it numerous times as a result. In fact, I just bought yet another copy because I have misplaced the original. Totally worth it! lol
